Melvin served in the 94th Division of the U.S. Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and Normandy during World War II. Following the war, he moved to La Crosse, where he worked at Allis Chalmers and later for LaCrosse Footwear. Melvin enjoyed woodworking, gardening, splitting firewood and fishing.
